The Day’s Delight: Home

Even though the trees are taller on the coast, even though the hills are higher, even though the ocean is vaster and more imposing than Superior, the loveliest sight today was the county line marked at a familiar curving rise, the deep blue of the great lake flashing between the trees, and the sweet and spicy scent of birch and balsam in my boreal forest.
