I saw a friend in the wild today! Both of us were treasure hunting at the thrift store (neither of us could fit into those marvelous red leather cowboy boots, alas!).
Her hair was bright as copper– a magic metal that sings and cleans. Her long-haired son showed me the clapper toy he found: “Do you know what this does?” he asked, and then showed me with great enthusiasm. Her elfin daughter tried on a green wool bonnet and grinned.
I found a vest. A book of poems. A tulip-red pot for plants. Two big bags of plastic Easter Eggs.
I found the hope and the resurrecting memory of gathering, of women simply getting together and sharing the search and the find.
